Hip
Hop has been defined aptly by one rapper “as the product of
the
inner city that seeks
victory over the oppressive routine of inner city
life and uses the general expression through the unique elements of
break
dancing, deejaying, emceeing (which is rapping), graffiti art,and
beat boxing (which is making music with your mouth),” to transform
it's
subjects from their existing terra firma (the ghetto) into another
state
of mind.
Hip
Hop is the noted music of "Generation X" and has survived
due
to it's ability to express the experiences, concerns, emotions and
challenges
facing today's youth in a manner in which they can understand.
There
are some that would argue that the essence of this music is demonic
since most of what has been portrayed by the artists within this genre
is
indecent and disorderly. Well, to those who have been offended by
their
encounter with the rude and wild side of Hip-Hop, we apologize.
However,
to those who would harshly judge Holy Hip Hop (which is music
that
is the voice of a generation set apart to glorify God, reach the lost,
and
edify the saints) based on the challenges that it creates for their
routines,
traditions, and personal preference, we say…this music can and
does glorify God!
So
what music does honor God? Music that is: (1) Controlled by the
Holy
Spirit; (2) Characterized by joy and celebration; (3) Captivated by
the redemptive
work and worth of Christ; (4) Committed to all kinds of instrumentation
and
praise;
(5) Centered in praise and thanksgiving to God for what He has done.
Overall, when listening to Holy Hip-Hop, ask yourself the following
questions:
Does
each song teach, rebuke, correct, equip, and/or train an individual
in
righteousness? When a person feels perplexed by the things they face
daily,
can they find themselves singing one of these songs to be edified,
encouraged,
and
inspired to carry on? But most of all, when listening to these songs,
ask
yourself, do they convey the hope of salvation Jesus Christ offers
to all men?
At
the end of each CD, if you can answer yes to any of these questions,
Holy Hip-Hop's mission has been accomplished.
